Hi, I’m Margie Remmers-Davis.
You may have heard my story of how a sudden divorce after 20 years being out of the work force as a stay at home mom led me to become a bookkeeper and certified QBO ProAdvisor. What I didn’t tell in that story was my journey to Advanced certification.
Like you, I knew how the Advanced certification would help my career:
Although it was challenging, I had made it through and gotten my basic level ProAdvisor certification. I figured I could just roll up my sleeves, dive in, and knock out the advanced one, too.
But the advanced test was so much harder!
I mean, it is advanced, after all, so I get that it’s going to be harder. But it was soooo much harder than I expected!!!
I spent days and days studying the online material and became completely overwhelmed.
If you know the story of my initial certification, you know that I am not a good reader. I really need to hear and do in order to learn something, and the Intuit training was just reading, reading, and more reading, with a few videos sprinkled in between.
So I attended the live bootcamps that Intuit offers. That was a little better, because at least I could listen, but I was one of a hundred students and there was no way to ask questions. I even googled and reached out to the instructor afterwards, but she refused to help me. (I don’t blame her–she has a busy practice to run. Teaching students isn’t her full-time job.)
But there was an even bigger problem. I have never taken an accounting class in my life. On the advanced test, you have to understand accounting practices such as debits and credits, but they don’t teach these things in the free training. They just expect you to know them. And it’s not the kind of thing that you can just “pick up” by learning the software. Someone has to teach you.
After WEEKS of studying and learning all these things, trying to jam them into my brain so I could take the test, and feeling like I was going to throw up every day, I finally passed on the third try. And thank heavens I did! As I mentioned, my very first client required me to use a feature I had only learned about in my advanced training.
As soon as I released my Fast & Easy basic level certification course, people started clamouring about the advanced level. It turns out I am not the only one who found this test nearly impossible!
If that sounds like like you, I’m happy to introduce…
